Heceta Head Lighthouse
Since graduation, I have been busy traveling and setting up my business that I haven’t really taken the opportunity to just relax and draw for fun again. So I thought I’d finally get back to one of my primary mediums and draw in my sketchbook again.
I recently went on a week long trip to Oregon and explored the beautiful landscapes, structures, and features throughout the region. One of the things that I enjoyed was all the unique lighthouses. So for this drawing, I really wanted to focus on the characteristic and features of one of those structures.
For this drawing I ended up choosing to depict an image I took of the Heceta Head Lighthouse in Florence, Oregon. This lighthouse was built in 1894 and has recently become a landmark on the Oregon coast. With this particular lighthouse, I wanted to highlight the textural features of the glass on the interior light, and also the symmetrical nature of the structure when depicted compositionally.
It has been a while since I have worked solely with pen and ink, and I am definitely a little rusty, but I thought it would be a great medium for this particular image and to also re-familiarize myself with as well. Pen and ink has always been one of my favorite drawing mediums; partially for the ability to replicate minuscule details, but also the repetitive nature when using the medium for shading and line work, so it was nice to work with it again.
