Liberty Market
Back to the illustrative series of drawings depicting local landmarks in and around the Phoenix area; and continuing further into the town of Gilbert, we have Liberty Market.
Known today as a popular brunch place in the heart of Historic Downtown Gilbert, Liberty Market initially originated as a grocery store in the 1930s. Keeping the memory of Gilbert’s historic district alive through the original building’s name and exterior, the space was later repurposed into a restaurant in 2008.
This is the first in the series where I tried to focus more so on a streamlined design when it came to the line work. I wanted each drawing to feel similar both in its illustrative style, but also in the techniques I am using for each one. So for this one, I focused on ways to best show different tonal values in my line work without muddying up the detail when getting into the darker tone variants.
This drawing in particular uses vertical and diagonal hatching as the lightest tones, perpendicular cross hatching as the medium tones, and inversed diagonal hatching as the darker tones; with thick and thin outlines differentiating the key components of the subject matter I am trying to portray.
